« À l’origine » is an opening and welcoming song. The writing and production of this song were thought to be the opening number of the grand televised Eurovision final to be held in Switzerland in May 2025. It is a song that conveys a simple and intelligible message. A welcome message, but also a message of universal love, solidarity and peace in the world! « À l’origine » is a song about brotherhood, equality between men and women, skin colors, the colors of our flags, a song about the union of hearts and nations.

With its swaying rhythms, its crowd claps and its anthem hook (Hey, oh! Hey, oh!), « À l’origine » is a perfect song to draw the audience into a moment of fusion, shared joy and positive energy .

In addition, those who know that the Eurovision Song Contest was created in our country in 1956 will also see a little wink. The ESC is returning to its country of origin; Switzerland! This great ship of European song, brought back to port by the avant-garde and fantastic Captain NEMO 😉
NEMO offered Switzerland « The code » in 2024 , the best possible song in English. And in order to continue its message of openness, peace, love, tolerance and respect, I would like to take up the challenge by offering you the best possible song in French for 2025.

The studio version of « À l’origine » that I am presenting to you today is therefore thought out and pre-produced specifically for Eurovision 2025. It is not a final version/production. It will of course always be possible to rework the song and adapt it as best as possible, according to the needs of the SSR production for the grand finale.

ALTERNATIVE VERSIONS OF THE SONG
I also have other alternative versions of my song that I could offer you. In particular a version with English lyrics that can be added to the existing French lyrics. This is a version that was initially intended to be performed by a bilingual singer-singer duo. But we have not yet had the opportunity to record and pre-produce it in order to present it to you. However, we could definitely discuss it, if you think it is an interesting idea.

BUT LET ME EXPLAIN WHY I THINK THAT IN 2025
SWITZERLAND NEEDS A SONG IN FRENCH:
First of all, because it is a beautiful and poetic language. A language that I love and to which I have strived to give rhythm in my songs for 25 years. But also because French is the 5th most spoken language in the world . After English and Spanish, French is the 3rd language of communication in Europe . It is a language that offers us a broad spectrum of communication throughout the world, while remaining in line with our values and our Swiss culture.

For my part, I consider that it is an important value at Eurovision to present a song in one of our national languages, as far as possible. This is already three years in a row that Switzerland has presented songs in English. I think we would do well to come up with something different this year, so that our country can stand out again. Especially since Switzerland will not have the pressure of having to pass pre-selections, since as the host country it is guaranteed to appear at the grand finale to do the opening number!

As the host country but also the founding country, I am convinced that Switzerland can give new impetus to the contest by showing the example of what can be done: a good song in a national language with a high-level artistic performance, subtly thwarting the clichés of rhinestones & glitter to which we are accustomed.

INTERPRETER(S)
The performer who sings and defends the song must also represent, obviously, the face of his country. During this great reception of Eurovision 2025, what image does Switzerland want to give to the rest of the world?

A SOLO SINGER?
Me, Mathieu Thioly
As I wrote in my application, as a professional Swiss singer, I would be honored to represent my country with my song. I believe that I transmit the image of the serene, reassuring, experienced and welcoming forty-year-old man. I am a singer in the lineage of the Swiss and French singer-songwriters who inspired me: Daho, Berger, Higelin, Eicher. I am a humanist daddy with a warm voice. However, I am well aware that I am not a dapper youthful vocalist who will strive to set the crowd alight with acrobatic octave jumps, a falsetto that pierces the sky, or a sparkling vibrato on the climax of a last measure filled with tears. No, I am not that kind of singer. Even if I sincerely respect and admire others a lot! On the other hand, yes, I know music. I have a hoarse, authentic voice and above all, I am capable of putting my sex appeal at the service of music when I feel the adrenaline rising in me! cf « Fou Dream »  et « Chaleur Bay » .

You can visit my website here, discover my work, read my biography, listen to my songs and watch my videos to understand a little better who I am. It’s all there! Unfortunately, many people today rely on the popularity rating of artists on social networks to judge the quality of their work. I find it a bit sad! In 2024, Eurovision presented us with the British singer Olly Alexander as a huge star in his country. However, he did not collect any points from the European public televote. Zero points. Nada. It was almost embarrassing to see that there could be, to this extent, no correlation between the popularity of an artist in his own country and the vote of the viewers who discover him for the first time on the evening of the final! I had really liked his song though. But I voted for Armenia and Luxembourg, because I found their productions more touching and the singers that I discovered really great! That said, if you still want a bit of glam and some numbers , I particularly invite you to watch my video« Fou Dream » which is sexy, funny, full of glitter and also full of spirit. My membership in the LGBTQI+ community is not my hobby horse with my music. But in this clip, I had a lot of fun showing my diversity and my colors. « Fou Dream »  has accumulated 14K views on YouTube and 3K views on Mx3 and was ON AIR TVon SRF2 as soon as it was released . It has been broadcast several times on several Swiss television channels.

I believe that we can continue to break codes ( « …break the code, wohoho… « ) and clichés, in order to remind that deep down, « À l’origine » , we are all the same! We all need love and respect. No matter our age, our language, our passport or our sexual orientation!

A DUET?
Lead singer & Vocalist singer
I also thought that a duo, with a singer/vocalist could be a good idea. I already have a few names in mind, but we haven’t had the chance to record the vocals and do tests yet. However, this option remains entirely open. I have another version of my song « À l’origine » with some lyrics added in English.  And this with a view to making a bilingual collaboration. We could also quite easily consider co-writing in Swiss-German, or in Italian, if the opportunity arises?

I would like to propose these different options to the SSR so that it can make the best possible artistic choices.

Lead singer & rapper
And otherwise, why not collaborate with a rapper from the current Swiss urban scene? I already have in mind a few names of artists from the Geneva scene that I know. We could add a verse to the song and/or different interventions carried by an emblematic figure of Swiss rap (in French, in English, in Swiss-German, etc.). This would be an idea to develop eventually, but which seems quite interesting to me.

Another solo performer
The SSR may simply wish to propose my song to another performer of their choice? In which case, I remain completely open to your proposals and I will be willing to collaborate with you closely or remotely on this project. As you may have noticed from reading this file, I am a professional, I have several strings to my bow, I am creative and I can adapt to different projects.

TO FINISH
I WILL REVEAL TO YOU A PREVIEW OF MY CONCEPT &
MY CHOICES OF ARTISTIC COLLABORATIONS
TO FORM A POTENTIAL DREAM TEAM 2025

THE OPENING NUMBER:
On stage we will have one or two singers, depending on the choice of the SSR (a soloist or a duo). Accompanied by dancers in even numbers, either 2 or 4. The scenography is spread out in 3 tableaux/dimensions:

Front stage: the performer(s)
With a microphone on a stand, they sing the song and engage the audience. They come and go with their wireless microphone, the microphone stand remains in place. They join the dancers on the choruses to participate in the choreography.

Mid-stage: the dancers
They also have microphones on stands. They play the role of the backing singers and sing in playback, they sing certain key phrases of the song. This is part of a choreography that accompanies the theme of the song, in an urban contemporary style,  at once modern, poetic and sophisticated. During the choruses, the dancers/choristers are joined by the performers to perform a simple and very visual dance movement that accompanies the lyrics. This choreographic movement will come back 3 times throughout the song, during the choruses ( « à l’origine, même racine « ). It is a little viral choreography that all children in front of their television at home will be able to, and will want to, reproduce in a spontaneous burst. A bit like La Macarena . Do you remember? This catchy, simple and fun movement that is also inseparable from the song. This movement will be the visual hook of the song « À l’origine » . It will be subtle and poetic. And we have already started to discuss and develop all these ideas with my friend, a dancer and choreographer from Geneva, the talented Melissa Ellberger . She has worked internationally for a long time, notably in Amsterdam for several years. Ideally, I would like to be able to continue a collaboration with her to develop the choreography of my song.

Backstage: the projected images
Static or moving film images. Images that, through their subtle symbolism and quiet strength, tell another story in parallel. A second reading in a way. A story that completes the one that is already being played out live in the front and middle of the stage. This story is that of Eurovision! The story of Eurovision, the History of music that goes back in time, that crosses eras, that reminds us of where we come from! It is also the History of humanity that returns to its source, to its origins… it’s a nice wink! It’s a beautiful rich story! But above all it’s a story yet to be written and a project yet to be developed…

We want to use VJing and Mapping. It’s a crazy project and for which we have already laid some foundations with my friend, the American director (Swiss by alliance), aka film director Trevor McMahan. He is a specialist in storytelling and thanks to his extensive experience in producing international advertising, he masters the script, images and editing with a professionalism and humanism that is rarely equaled.

To work with us on the implementation of this image choreography, I would also like to collaborate with my Swiss-American friend Amalia McMahan. As a visual artist and motion graphic designer, Amalia has extensive experience in international pop music. She stands out for having worked with renowned artists such as Daft Punk, Eminem and Beyoncé!
I am therefore convinced that the visual project of « À l’origine » for Switzerland at Eurovision in 2025 would be in very good hands with her!
